While at Red Hat, she was highly instrumental in the global mentorship and coaching program. Her tips include negotiating aggressively, do your research, have data ready to quote about your performance, and have a back up plan for if they say no – for example, asking for an alternate reward like a car allowance or annual leave. She suggests surrounding yourself with great role models of people who you want to be like!

Taking Career Risks and Having a Plan

Joan talks about how in order for someone to be successful, they always need to have goals and objectives for both the short term and the long term. Her short term goal is usually about 6 months away whereby she asks herself, what does she want to have achieved in 6 months time? This allows her to pivot if needed to achieve the long term goal.
